Vilaflor

Vilaflor is a municipality in the southern part of the island of Tenerife, part of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The municipality center - the village of Vilaflor is situated at an altitude of 1400 metres above sea level, South of the Teide volcano and 51 km from the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This is the highest village in Tenerife and throughout Spain. The city is surrounded by pine forests, among which are plantations of tomatoes and vineyards.

Legend has it that its name Vilaflor received by Spanish captain Pedro de Bracamonte, who, seeing here a beautiful girl from the tribe of Guanches, exclaimed, "VI La Flor de Private!" "I saw a flower Day!" (in the past Vilaflor called Private).

Vilaflor was founded in the 16th century. Natural sights of the settlement are a geological formation of lunar Paysage, pine, Piña El Gordo and mineral springs of Fuente Alta, which is located at an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level in the reserve. And the main man-made monument in Vilaflor can be called Santo hermano Pedro Church, built in honor of St. Pedro de San Jose Betancourt, a native of these places, and the first Saint of the Canary Islands. Brother Pedro lived a pious life in a cave near El Medano, then emigrated to Guatemala and founded there the first in the New world religious order - williamites.

The construction of the Church in his honor began in the late 18th century, but due to the political transition in Spain, the Church almost two centuries remained unfinished. Only in 1991-m to year it was possible to resume construction work, and in 2002, the year the Church was consecrated. Today, the Church of Santo hermano Pedro kept part of the spine of the Saint of Betancourt and the bell he used to call worshipers. On the main altar you can see the image of the Holy and blessed Mary of the incarnation, sisters williamette. The building of the Church is remarkable stone façade. It is located in the centre of Vilaflor, just behind the Church of the Apostle Peter. From it starts the pilgrimage route of Camino del hermano Pedro, which in the past the Holy Betancourt spent his flock to the cave in El Medano. Every year hundreds of pilgrims pass this way with great religious and historical value.
